MetricNudge vs Spreadsheets and Separate Tools
You can run an app's growth from a spreadsheet and a few free tools, and many good apps do. This is a fair comparison of that setup with MetricNudge: where the spreadsheet wins, and where it stops being worth the time.
What the do-it-yourself setup looks like
A typical indie setup: a spreadsheet of keywords with ranks you check by hand, the store's own console for downloads and ratings, RevenueCat's dashboard for subscriptions, and perhaps a general analytics tool for in-app events. Each part is good at its own job. The cost is in joining them.
Where the spreadsheet is the right answer
- Price: it costs nothing, and the free tiers of the console and RevenueCat are generous.
- Flexibility: you can track anything you can type.
- One app, a few keywords: checking ten phrases weekly by hand is quick.
- You like it: if you check it and act on it, it works.
Where it starts to hurt
- Rankings need a daily history. By hand you check weekly at best, so you miss what changed after an edit. Across several countries and competitors the manual work grows fast.
- The pieces never meet. Keyword rank in one place, installs in another, trials in a third. Questions like "did the rank rise before the installs did?" mean copying numbers between tabs.
- Nobody tells you what to do. Dashboards show numbers; turning them into a decision is still your job each week.
- It decays. A sheet that needs weekly manual updates gets skipped in the busy weeks, exactly when something may be going wrong.
What MetricNudge does instead
- Keywords: tracks your App Store and Google Play rank every day per country, with competitors, volume and difficulty estimates, and ideas for new phrases.
- Analytics: installs, onboarding funnel, paywall funnel, retention and the last action of people who left, from a small SDK for iOS (Swift) and Android (Flutter).
- Revenue: optional; connect RevenueCat to see revenue, trials, renewals and refunds beside the rest.
- A plan: a plain-words weekly summary of what changed and the one thing to do first. The AI part is optional and uses your own Anthropic key.
What it does not do
- It does not replace the store consoles: install totals there are the store's own, and MetricNudge counts first opens from your app, so the two can differ slightly.
- It does not design your listing or screenshots.
- Keyword demand is an estimate, not an exact search count; no outside tool has the real figures.
- It is a paid product once you outgrow the free plan, with its own learning curve and one more place to log in.
How to choose
If you have one app, a handful of phrases and the discipline to update a sheet, keep the sheet. If you track more phrases or countries, you have lost a week because you did not notice a drop, or you keep copying numbers between tabs, a joined-up tool starts to pay for itself. The free plan lets you try it on one app and compare it with your sheet for a few weeks before deciding.
Not sure where to start? The ASO checklist works with either setup.
Try it on your own app
MetricNudge tracks your keyword rankings in every storefront, shows your app's analytics, and writes a plain-words plan of what to do next. The free plan needs no card.
